Prof. Mahmoud Fouad

Student Activities Chair

Dr. Mahmoud Fouad is a distinguished figure in mechanical engineering, particularly in HVAC systems and indoor air quality. He earned his B.Sc. (1972) and M.Sc. (1974) in Mechanical Engineering from Cairo University, followed by a Ph.D. (1979) from Salford University in England.

Throughout his career, Dr. Fouad  held many positions including (Professor and past chairman of Department of Mechanical Power Engineering at Cairo University, Visiting professor at AUC, Carleton University in Canada, University of California, Berkeley)

Eng. Bassem Essam

Student Activities Co-Chair

Bassem Essam is an HVAC Design Engineer at PGESCO. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical Power Engineering from Cairo University in 2023.

His involvement with ASHRAE started in 2021 as an ASHAE Student where he earned #2 at ASHRAE RAL Regional Competition & Qualified to the regional level for ASHRAE HVAC Design Competition while leading as ASHRAE Cairo University Student Branch President in 2023.

Being a young achiever and with a bright career ahead, Eng. Bassem is currently appointed as Cairo Chapter Student Activities Co-Chair and Communication Chair.

ASHRAE Cairo Chapter Student Activities (SA) is responsible for developing comprehensive program for the educational community for the purpose of promoting and encouraging engineering and HVAC&R careers. it administers and promotes student activities at all levels in the educational system.

ASHRAE seeks to motivate the students worldwide to pursue an engineering or technology career in the HVAC&R field, part of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) industry. The Society’s Scholarship Program also serves the public interest by aiding in the education of men and women to become qualified to practice as engineers in HVAC&R.

Over the course of 30 years ASHRAE has awarded over $2.25 million to 400+ deserving students.

The Student Activities Committee is offering five $1,000 USD travel grants to help subsidize studens to travel to the Winter Conference in 2025.

ASHRAE offers students the opportunity to showcase their technical expertise by joining different competitions available for different educational levels, starting by High School and all the way to master’s degree.

Winners get the opportunity to attend the following winter conference as well ash cash prizes.

Smart Start is a 3-year program that allows Student members to transfer to Associate grade membership at a rate that is recent-graduate friendly. Student members who are graduating soon or have recently graduated should complete the Smart Start form to participate.

Establish Your Student Branch Now!

ASHRAE Students operate through student branches named after their corresponding schools and universities. Operating through a student branch allows you to apply to different types of scholarships and adds up to your ASHRAE contribution.

Establishing a Student Branch is an easy and simple process that goes as follows:

  • Get 1 of the university professors to be Student Branch Advisor (SBA) at an annual fee of 15$
  • Put together 10 student members. Membership fees 15$ Annually
  • Fill the student New Student Branch Request

New Student Branches are approved in the Winter Conference and Annual Conference of each year.

ASHRAE Cairo Chapter successfully claimed the 2025 ASHRAE High School Design Competiton by 16 years old, Highschool student from Al-Ola Language School, Mohamed Gamal Wefky under supervision of the 2024-2025 SA Co-Chair Eng. Bassem Essam.
